USB Devices and USB Driver Support (top)
Note: The EHCI HCD driver for USB 2.0 should not be considered ready to use. We have tested several
types, makes, and models of 2.0 devices and found it
to be unreliable. You may have better results but consider
this driver to be EXPERIMENTAL until the next stable release of the
operating system which is supposed to have much better USB support.
Also: We have tested a number of makes and models of USB
scanners and have not had much success because of poor resolution
and/or unreliable or incomplete support. If you require
scanner support you should only attempt SCSI scanners. They
cost more but are faster, have better resolution and tend to better
supported by the SCSI drivers. Example: HP ScanJet 5P SCSI works
GREAT!

Printers & Scanners (top)
Most Serial, Parallel, Network and Remote Printers are
supported. Our software relies on the network workstations to
use the correct drivers for any configured printer. Our
software should be used to manage all of your network and remote
printer print queues.
USB printers are semi-supported but in our tests, are not yet
reliable enough.
USB, parallel and serial scanners are semi-supported but in our
tests, are not yet reliable enough.
SCSI scanners seem to work quite well and have decent support for
the most popular brands. However, our recommendation is to connect
any scanner needed to a local workstation and use any included
drivers as recommended by the manufacturer.
|
Modems (top)
Our installation uses Hylafax for actually sending
and receiving faxes. Hylafax supports most class 1, 2, 2.0 fax
modems. Internal, External, and USB fax modems are supported.
"Winmodems" are not supported. "Linmodems" are
semi-supported but not recommended. You are better off
spending a little extra on a true fax modem which will NOT show
"Controllerless" or "Windows Modem" on the packaging.
We have used the external serial MultiTech MT2834ZDXb and USB
MultiTech MT5634ZBA-USB quite extensively with good results.
The MT2834ZDXb is a class 2 serial modem and does not work quite as
well as the MT5634ZBA-USB modem which is class 1 or 2 (we use them
in class 1 mode).
The Zoom 56K 2985L USB modem seems to be another good choice and
costs less. We have not used this modem as much as the
MutiTech but preliminary results indicate that it will work
equivalent to the MT5634ZBA-USB.
Bear in mind that USB modems and class 1 modems require more
usage of your computer's CPU. Increasing RAM memory and a
faster CPU will allow you to use more of these devices and is
recommended over using semi-supported multi-port serial cards or
multi-modem cards. Our experience is that the drivers for
these cards are incomplete and/or are not as reliable as the USB
modems when used for mass faxing.
Practically all non "Winmodems" work well for dial-in/dial-out
services on servers created with our installation, including USB
modems.
